Biodegradable sanitary pads

71% Women Use Non-Biodegradable Sanitary Napkins and What This Means For The Environment

Non Bio-degradable Sanitary Products

In 2020, a survey was conducted on Menstrual Hygiene Day. Results show that 71% of women use non biodegradable sanity pads.

Almost 49 and 12 billion sanitary products are thrown out in the EU and the US respectively. This is equivalent to approximately 27kg of CO2. Sanitary products contributes to about 1 Million metric tons of waste a year. These non biodegradable products take 500 to 800 years to decompose.

Pads and Tampons that are disposed are placed in landfills and will potential release toxic chemicals to the environment. Some single use sanitary products are irresponsibly flushed down toilets which will lead to blockages and water pollution. This will ultimately affect marine life in the ocean

Hence, given all these facts, there is a clear need to change consumer's mindsets to be more environmentally responsible.

Bio-degradable Sanitary Products

Women will use approximately more than 11,000 disposable menstrual products in their lifetime.

Wood pulp in conventional sanitary products contain chlorine and dioxin. These are highly toxic to the human body which can lead to Endometriosis (an often painful disorder in which tissue similar to the tissue that normally lines the inside of your uterus — the endometrium — grows outside your uterus).

Given the negative impacts non biodegradable products on our health and the environment, there is a need to use biodegradable sanitary products. Most biodegradable products are chemical free and hypoallergenic which prevents allergic reactions on skin contact.

A company called Nala Woman is the change we need. Pushing the idea of saving the environment to it limits. Nala Woman have come up with biodegradable sanitary products that include Pads, Pantyliners and Tampons.

"We wanted safe & sustainable products, free from harmful chemicals, artificial fibers, and plastics with which were littering our oceans & landfills."
